Meet Dr. Tonya Moore

Staff Spotlight

Meet Dr. Tonya Moore; Director of Career Services, and advisor for the GSC Toastmasters International Club.

Moore, a Michigan native, earned her bachelor's degree in business administration from Tennessee State University, MBA from Bellarmine University, master's degree in mental health counseling from Fort Valley State University, and her doctoral degree in human capital development from The University of Southern Mississippi.

Moore began working with Gordon State College during her GS@FVSU bridge program in 2007. She began as the director of the joint program after serving as business faculty at Fort Valley State University. In her current role, she has the privilege of assisting students with developing their career readiness skills and building employer partnerships. Moore’s favorite part of her job is connecting students to career opportunities and getting them hired. She hopes that students begin to feel empowered to chase their dreams and become masters at finding the resources needed to achieve their goals in life, academics and their careers after meeting with her.

When she was young, Moore had dreams of becoming a teacher. She would pretend to have a classroom and teach her sister and neighborhood friends. It was later that she discovered an interest in helping students develop professionally. She loves learning and obtaining resources to do things better. The Career Services space was a natural fit to apply her favorite pedagogy when advising students which is to teach, coach and then apply.

Her proudest moment at Gordon was starting the Career Services Ambassador Program and helping the students develop their communication and leadership skills. Gordon students won 1st and 2nd place out of 12 USG schools during a Community Impact Challenge Competition that was hosted on campus in March 2019. Moore is also proud to have chartered the GSC Toastmasters Club in 2016. She says many students who have become members over the years are doing very well in their careers. Previous members of the club keep in touch with her and are excited to share updates about their accomplishments.

During her career, Moore has had the opportunity to build the Career Services Center from the ground up. Working at Gordon has afforded her the opportunity to build National Networks and obtain a multitude of certifications and degrees. She has also developed a host of friendships with her colleagues and had the opportunity to participate in the Highlander Leadership Academy and the USG Executive Leadership Institute. Moore is a proud member of the Highlander Community. She celebrates the achievements of Gordon in light of its smaller size and roots for its continued growth towards becoming a school unlike any other in the region.
