Basic Equipment Operation

The Extron Control Panel (shown below) allows you to turn on/off the entire system in order to display a projected image on the screen as well as toggle between the different types of equipment.

  1. DISPLAY - These buttons are used to turn the entire system ON/OFF including the projector, multimedia podium, DVD/VCR, and sound system.
  2. VOLUME- This knob is used to lower or raise the volume of the wall mounted speakers. NOTE: It is important not to turn the knob too fast otherwise the volume will become out of sync. If this occurs slowly turn the knob clockwise (volume up) and then slowly turn the knob counter-clockwise (volume down) to the desired level.
  3. MIC VOL - These buttons are used to lower and raise the volume of the podium microphone and/or the wireless lapel microphone.
  4. AUTO IMAGE - Pressing this button will resync the image being projected on the screen. Most of the time you will not need to use this button, though sometimes minor adjustments may be necessary to perfect an image.
  5. VCR - Pressing this button displays the image from the VHS tape playing in the Zenith DVD / VCR Player Combo (inside Equipment Cabinet) onto the projection screen.
  6. CABLE - Pressing this button displays the image from the Cable Television feed coming from the Sharp VCR located on the top of the Equipment Cabinet onto the projection screen. Can also play a VHS tape.
  7. PC - Pressing this button displays the image from the PC inside of the multimedia podium onto the projection screen.
  8. LAPTOP 1 - Pressing this button displays the image from a device hooked up to the external VGA connector located in the multimedia podium onto the projection screen.
  9. DVD - Pressing this button displays the image from a DVD playing in the Zenith DVD / VCR Player Combo (inside Equipment Cabinet) onto the projection screen.
  10. PROJECTOR OFF - Pressing this button will turn OFF the projector display if you plan on using the sound system ONLY and not the multimedia.

The following instructions are basic operating procedures for using the multimedia equipment in the Student Center Auditorium.

Powering Up Equipment

  1. If you plan on using the multimedia projector, lower the projection screen above the stage using the on/off switch located next to the Equipment Cabinet.
  2. Power up the system by using the Extron Control Panel by pressing the ON button under Display (see Extron diagram above). The ON button will light up after it is pressed. Please allow ample time for the equipment to warm up. The ON button will power up everything all at once including the projector, multimedia podium, DVD/VCR, and the sound system.

  3. OPTIONAL: The projector will automatically turn on after you power up the system. If you would prefer NOT to use the projector (ex. Sound system use only) press the RED button on the Extron Control Panel (Label #10 shown in diagram above).

Using the Multimedia PC

  1. The PC should automatically turn on after the system is powered up from the Extron Control Panel.

  2. Raise the flat screen PC monitor by pressing the button labeled with an up arrow located on the countertop of the podium.

  3. Slide the keyboard tray out and logon to the PC using your Gordon network account.
  4. On the Extron Control Panel, press the button labeled PC (Label #7 shown in diagram above) to project the PC image onto the screen above the stage.
  5. HINT: If you have a USB device, you can use the USB port located on the side of the flat screen monitor instead of the PC for easy access.

Using a Laptop or other VGA supported device

  1. A VGA cable is available to use with any device having a VGA output such as a Laptop. The cable is located in the side door compartment of the multimedia podium.
  2. Open the side door and locate the VGA cable. Plug the cable into the VGA output usually located on the back of the Laptop.
  3. For sound - plug in the 1/8" audio cable into the Laptop's audio output (usually labeled with a picture of a headphone set).
  4. On the Extron Control Panel, press the button labeled Laptop 1 (Label #8 shown in diagram above) to project the Laptop image onto the screen above the stage.

Using the DVD / VCR Player Combo

  1. Power on the Zenith DVD / VCR player located inside of the Equipment Cabinet and insert DVD media or a VHS tape.
  2. On the Extron Control Panel, press the button labeled VCR (Label #5 shown in diagram above) to display the video from a VHS tape or press DVD (Label #9) to display the video from a DVD onto the projection screen.
  3. The DVD / VCR Player can be controlled (i.e. Play, Pause, Stop, Rewind, Fast Forward) using the player controls, remote control (Zenith), or the Extron Control Panel's DVD & VCR Control (see below).

Using the Cable Television Feed

  1. Cable television is available from the Sharp VCR located on top of the Equipment Cabinet.
  2. Power on the VCR.
  3. On the Extron Control Panel, press the button labeled CABLE (Label #6 shown in diagram above) to display the television onto the projection screen.
  4. Change cable channels by using the controls on the VCR or by using the remote control (Sharp). A VHS tape can also be played in the unit.

Using the Microphone System

  1. The microphone located on the multimedia podium countertop and the wireless lapel microphone are automatically active when the system is powered on using the Extron Control Panel.
  2. To use the wireless mic (located in the Equipment cabinet middle-drawer) hold the power on button at the top of the unit for a few seconds until the light comes on.
  3. Clip mic to shirt and battery pack to belt or other.
  4. Adjust volume up/down using the MIC VOL buttons located on the Extron Control Panel and/or the wireless unit itself to achieve desired level.

Sound / Volume

The sound system includes wall mounted speakers at the front and back of the auditorium. These speakers support audio from all inputs including the PC, DVD / VCR Combo player, Cable/VCR, microphone (podium and wireless mic), and external laptop. Adjust the volume by using the Extron Control Panel volume controls shown in the diagram above (see #2 above).

NOTE: It is important not to turn the knob too fast otherwise the volume will become out of sync. If this occurs slowly turn the knob clockwise (volume up) and then slowly turn the knob counter-clockwise (volume down) to the desired level.

Shutting Down Equipment

  1. When finished, remove any media from the PC / DVD / VCR
  2. Perform normal SHUT DOWN on PC
  3. Lower the flat screen PC monitor by pressing the button labeled with a down arrow located on the countertop of the podium. IMPORTANT: Make sure that the monitor is NOT tilted or that NO objects are near the mechanism that would obstruct the lowering of the screen.
  4. Power down the system by pressing the OFF button (see #1 in diagram above) on the Extron Control Panel under Display. This will power off the entire system. Please note that the system will take upwards of 2 minutes to shut down completely as it enters a cooling-down period.
