Importing and Exporting Favorites

You can share lists of your Favorites between computers by using the Import and Export feature in Internet Explorer. This is helpful in situations like:

  • saving your Favorites to your 'H:' drive for future importing to another computer or to your own computer after it has been ghosted (erased)
  • sending yourself a folder of Favorites that you have gathered from home to school

To Export a list of your Favorites

This section explains how to export your bookmarks to an HTML file, which can be used as a backup or for importing into another web browser.

  1. Click the Bookmarks button Bookmarks-29 and select Show All Bookmarks to open the Library window.
  2. From the toolbar on the Library windows, click Import and Backup and choose Export choose Export Bookmarks to HTML....
  3. In the Export Bookmarks File window that opens, choose a location to save the file, which is named bookmarks.html by default. The desktop is usually a good spot, but any place that is easy to remember will work.
  4. Click the Save button. The Export Bookmarks File window will close.
  5. Close the Library window.

Your bookmarks are now successfully exported from Firefox. The bookmarks HTML file you saved is now ready to be imported into another web browser.

To Import a list of your Favorites

This section explains how to import an HTML bookmarks file formatted in the Netscape Bookmarks format.

  1. Click the Bookmarks button Bookmarks-29 and select Show All Bookmarks to open the Library window.
  2. From the toolbar on the Library window, click Import and Backup and choose Import Bookmarks from HTML....
  3. Within the Import Bookmarks File window that opens, navigate to the bookmarks HTML file you are importing and select the file.
  4. Click the Open button. The Import Bookmarks File window will close.
  5. Close the Library window.
The bookmarks in the selected HTML file will be added to your Firefox bookmarks within the Bookmarks Menu directory.
