YuJa is a video hosting and creation platform available to Gordon State faculty, staff, and students. It can be used to create instructional videos or projects. This program can be used inside or outside of Brightspace by D2L.
How do I access YuJa?
Your YuJa Media Library, which is where you will create and edit your videos, can be accessed inside or outside of Brightspace by D2L.
- To access inside of D2L, navigate to any course, choose "Tools/Resources" on the navigation bar, then choose "YuJa Media Library".
- To access outside of D2L, navigate to this link: https://gordonstate.yuja.com. In the top section, filter by Gordon State College Single Sign-On. Log in with your Gordon email username and password. This will take you to your YuJa Media Library.
What are some of the main features of YuJa?
When creating a video with YuJa, you can:
- Create an instructional video using audio, video, and/or multiple screens (videos of your screen, powerpoint, other files, etc.)
- Edit and trim sections of the video
- Auto-generate captions for the video
- Track viewer analytics of how much of the video students have watched & potentially issue a grade based upon viewing percentage
- Add in title slides (bookmarks) to your video so that students can jump to specific parts of the video
- Add in quiz questions so that the video will pause and ask questions. The scores on these quiz questions will be reported to the D2L gradebook
- Allow students to search the video using key terms
As the instructor, I want to create a video without a quiz and use it inside or outside of D2L.
You can create your video within D2L or using the direct link to YuJa. After creating your video, you can use the D2L integration to pull the video into D2L. If you do not use D2L, however, you can get the direct link to the video from within YuJa and share it with your students via email or other communication sources.
As the instructor, I want to create a video with embedded quiz questions.
You can create a video (or upload a video already recorded as an .mp4) and add content quiz questions to the video. Question types include: multiple choice, true/false, multiple select, short answer, and fill in the blank. Short answer questions are the only type not auto-graded by YuJa. If all questions are auto-graded, the student's grade will immediately report to the D2L gradebook. If there is a short answer question, the instructor will need to grade it in the YuJa gradebook and then push the grades to the D2L gradebook.
It is very important to consider the settings on the quiz before publishing it. Once students have taken the quiz, the instructor cannot make edits to those settings. The instructor will need to consider how many attempts the students have to watch the video and take the quiz.
Videos with embedded quiz questions can be used outside of D2L with the appropriate weblink located within the instructor's media library.
As the instructor, I want my students to receive a grade based upon how much of the video they have viewed.
In YuJa, the instructor can create a playback quiz, which doesn't actually have any quiz questions in it. Instead, this quiz allows a grade based upon the student's viewing percentage to pass back into D2L. Even without a playback quiz, the instructor will be able to view what parts and how much of the video a student has viewed. The playback quiz, however, is what creates and pushes the percentage into the D2L gradebook.
As the instructor, I want to add content or playback quizzes into a Youtube video.
You can link in a Youtube video and add content quiz questions to it. You can also choose to set up a playback quiz so that students are given a grade based upon how much of the video they have watched. This is similar to the process used when adding quizzes to a self-created video.
How will my students view and interact with YuJa videos?
In addition to viewing the video, students can search for key terms, select instructor-created bookmarks, as well as submit quiz questions within the YuJa video. It is important that they choose to "submit" the quiz after answering the quiz questions.
This resource will provide an overview of how students will see and interact with YuJa videos.
How do students create their own YuJa videos to submit as a project?
Students can create and host videos within their own YuJa Media Library. The process is very similar to one that an instructor uses when creating videos. Students can record themselves, their screen, or both. They can edit the video and get the link to submit as an activity into either the discussion or assignment area. Students will be dependent on sharing the video via the link because they will not be able to pull in the video using the D2L integration.
This resource will provide an overview of how students can create and share their own YuJa videos.
