Pride and Prejudice

Performances: Thursday, April 9, 10, 11 @ 6:30pm; Sunday, April 12 @ 2pm

Kate Hamill's adaptation of Pride and Prejudice offers a vibrant and contemporary reimagining of Jane Austen's classic novel. Infused with slapstick humor, modern sensibilities, and dynamic staging, this production transforms the traditional period drama into a lively theatrical experience that resonates with today's audiences.
At the heart of the story is the outspoken and independent Lizzy Bennet, who is determined to avoid marriage despite societal pressures. Her resolve is tested by the persistent presence of the enigmatic Mr. Darcy, leading to a series of witty and unexpected encounters that explore the complexities of love and societal expectations.
Hamill's adaptation is characterized by its fast-paced, comedic approach, often likened to a screwball comedy. A small cast of actors takes on multiple roles, adding layers of humor and versatility to the performance. Innovative staging choices, including contemporary dance moves and anachronistic props, create a dynamic and engaging atmosphere that breaks the fourth wall and invites the audience into the story in a unique way.
Critics have praised this adaptation for its bold and refreshing take on the beloved novel. The New Yorker highlighted Hamill's ability to create "kinetic stage concoctions" that bring nineteenth-century novels to life with energy and humor.
Overall, Kate Hamill's Pride and Prejudice offers a delightful and thought-provoking exploration of love, societal norms, and personal growth, making it a compelling experience for both longtime Austen fans and newcomers alike.
