Graduating students are expected to wear the caps and gowns that have been designated by the college.

If you purchase or borrow a cap and gown from a previous Gordon graduate, you must verify that the cap and gown you have matches the one being sold by our bookstore.  If your gown does not match, you will not be allowed to wear it.

Important Note: No decorations may be applied to the gown.

The appropriate cap for graduates is the familiar black "mortarboard." The mortarboard is worn straight on the head with the point of the cap in the center of the forehead. Tassels will be worn on the RIGHT side of the cap.

Graduates are allowed to decorate their mortar boards upon the following conditions:

  • No obscene language, gestures or similar expressions that might be interpreted as obscene.
  • No offensive language, gestures or similar expressions that might be interpreted as offensive.
  • No modification to the mortar board that would obstruct the view of fellow graduates or attendees.

If a mortar board is found to be unacceptable, the student must immediately purchase a replacement mortar board to be allowed to participate in the graduation exercise. If you are unsure whether or not your design is appropriate, please contact Academic Affairs before you decorate.
