GSC Theatre Reimagines Shakespeare’s Classic “Romeo and Juliet”

By Karolina Philmon, GSC marketing manager
Gordon State College’s spring theatre production will bring a fresh take on a timeless classic with an adapted version of “Romeo and Juliet” by Lisa Cesnik Ferguson, GSC’s director of theatre. The production will run April 3-6 at the GSC Fine Arts Theatre, with performances at 6:30 p.m. each night and a Sunday matinee at 2 p.m. on April 6.
Cesnik Ferguson explains that the production brings Shakespeare’s play to life with energetic sword fights, lively dancing, and intense scene work.
“The characters of this timeless play will make audiences fall in love with them before breaking their hearts,” Cesnik Ferguson said. “No one who watches the Gordon students, community members and teachers present this play will forget the experience, with its pure excitement and the modified audience seating which surrounds the playing space.”
GSC welcomed back special guests to contribute choreography to the production, with fight choreography led by returning guest Scot Mann and newcomer Allie Hodges, a Mercer University graduate, while Lucy Flournoy Archer provides dance choreography.
Mann, an award-winning fight master, serves as president of the Society of American Fight Directors and is a certified teacher with the British Academy of Stage and Screen Combat. Hodges, a stage combat enthusiast, is making her debut contribution to the production. Flournoy Archer, originally from Columbus, Georgia, is an internationally recognized physical theater artist, choreographer, and educator based in Berlin, Germany.
GSC employees and students can attend the production at no cost with a valid GSC ID. For others, ticket prices are $10 for adults and $5 for students. Advance ticket purchases are available through https://bit.ly/GSCRomeoandJuliet.
The 2025-26 season is made possible in part through a grant from Upson EMC in Thomaston, Georgia and GSC Board of Trustees member, Dan White, with the endowed Constance H. Chinery Fine and Performing Arts Support Fund.
