In early March, two Gordon State College students represented Highlander Nation at the 101st annual meeting of the Georgia Academy of Sciences (GAS) located on the campus of Kennesaw State University.

Kiara Mitchell and Kara Hendrix were assigned to the Biological Sciences category of the conference with their poster presentation on "Myoglobin Concentration in Florida Manatee Muscle Tissue." Both students are biology majors at GSC.

GSC Associate Professor of Biology Dr. Cori Newton accompanied Mitchell and Hendrix, expressing they both enjoyed the opportunity to showcase their undergraduate research.

“It not only enabled them to discuss their work, but also allowed them to explore a variety of research projects from other local and more distant universities,” Newton said.

Past-President of GAS, and GSC Professor of Biology Dr. Amanda L.J. Duffus said she and her department actively encourage both undergraduate and graduate students to present their work at GAS conferences.

“Attending the GAS meeting offers students a fantastic platform to exhibit their undergraduate research projects and establish meaningful connections with undergraduates, graduate students, instructors, and professors from different academic institutions in Georgia,” Duffus said.

Organized in 1922, GAS is dedicated to the promotion of science education and the fostering of scientific research in the state of Georgia. The Academy holds annual scientific meetings that emphasize the presentation of undergraduate and graduate research.
