Gordon State College’s debate team delivered a standout performance at the 3rd annual Regents Cup Debate Tournament, competing against top institutions across Georgia and earning the highest finish among state colleges in its first year of competition.
Hosted at Columbus State University on April 14-15, the Regents Cup brought together 16 institutions from across the University System of Georgia. GSC tied for eighth place overall, matching the performance of larger institutions while leading all state colleges in the competition.
Despite being a new program, GSC’s results reflect significant growth and preparation. The debate team entered the tournament with limited experience and quickly developed the skills needed to compete at a high level.
“This year we proved to ourselves that we can be competitive at the highest level,” said Dr. Erik McCarthy, debate coach. “We will enter the tournament next year with greater confidence in what we can achieve.”
Maxee Peacock, an engineering major from Henry County, led the team’s performance, advancing through a demanding first day of competition to reach the semifinal round. Richard Stewart, a nursing major from Clayton County, and Austin Eubanks, a human services major from Fayette County, also contributed to the team’s strong overall finish.
The Regents Cup follows the International Public Debate Association format, requiring competitors to think quickly and perform under pressure. Students are given only 30 minutes to prepare arguments on an unknown topic and position before each debate, which typically lasts 25 to 30 minutes.
“Debate encourages civil discourse and builds confidence,” McCarthy said. “Students learn to speak clearly, listen respectfully and engage with complex issues, all of which translate directly into career readiness.”
The program currently includes five student members and continues to focus on developing leadership, communication and critical thinking skills that extend beyond competition and into the professional world.
From debate to entrepreneurship, GSC is gaining momentum in areas that directly support career readiness. These accomplishments highlight a growing culture of achievement and reinforce the college’s commitment to preparing students for success beyond the classroom.
