USG Extends $28K Grant for Gordon State College to Help Adult Learners, Veterans Earn a Degree

Gordon State College has been issued an extension of the University System of Georgia (USG) Adult Learner Small Grant. First issued in 2022, the $28K grant supports the recruitment, enrollment and retention services for adult learners; more specifically for those adults who have some college credit but have not yet earned a degree.
At GSC, this grant funding is primarily being used to expand the implementation of Credit for Prior Learning opportunities. Funds also have helped cover the cost of an adult-focused website portal, recruitment materials, faculty stipends and software to assess prior learning credits.
The grant is being administered through the GSC Office of Innovative Education and Strategic Initiatives led by Dr. Ric Calhoun, assistant vice president and supported by Ashley Travis, innovative education specialist.
“Credit for Prior Learning is more important than ever in helping adult students achieve a degree. Recognition of prior learning saves students time and money as well as increasing the likelihood that they complete a degree,” Calhoun said.
In a 2019 study by CAEL, of which GSC was a participant, researchers found that adults who earn any credit for prior learning are 17% more likely to graduate than those who do not.
Calhoun said that he, the College, and all that are involved are grateful for the support to better serve adult learners and veterans of Highlander Nation and the community.
“We are very appreciative of the USG for recognizing this growing need and for stepping in to help our college better serve our surrounding communities,” Calhoun said.
