Welcome Week Schedule of Events

Thursday, August 15

8am - 3pm
Freshman Move-In: Residence halls open for new freshman students.

5pm
GSC Welcome Barbecue: On Lambdin Green, freshmen students will enjoy a barbecue outside at the GSC Amphitheater to mix and mingle with their fellow new Highlanders.

7pm
Play Fair: Freshmen students will meet at Summer’s Field Park to have the ultimate “Welcome to Gordon” experience!

 

Friday, August 16

10am – 12pm
Getting to Know Your Professors: Freshmen students will learn more about faculty by participating in games, including “Who Has,” “A Letter to my Freshman Self,” “Don’t Judge a Book,” and “Rate my Student”.   

12pm-1pm
Table Truck Lunch: Freshmen will have the opportunity to experience table truck dining, which includes tacos, funnel fries, kabobs, and nachos.

1pm-2pm
Check in with the Dean: Freshmen will have the opportunity to meet and converse with Gordon’s Dean of Students, Dr. Matthew Robison.

2pm-3pm
Life as a Major & Building a Successful Student: Freshmen will be grouped by their discipline of interest and gain perspective on what it is like to study within that area. They will also learn about the necessary skills for their chosen profession.

3pm-3:30pm
How to Get Involved & Succeed Academically: The Honors Program will provide tips for freshmen in regards to starting the semester off on the right foot.

9pm - Midnight
Campus Glow Party: In the SARC, party late into the night with music from a local DJ while sporting free glow necklaces, bracelets, rings, sticks, and much more!

 

Saturday, August 17

8am - Noon
Freshman Community Plunge: Join your fellow Highlanders in a morning of service in the community surrounding Gordon State’s campus. Check-in and breakfast begin at 8am in the Dining Hall; community service experience goes from 9am - Noon.

1 - 8pm
Campus Fun Zone, Scavenger Hunt, and Challenge Course: Inflatables and water slides will be set up on the SARC Green for some summer fun!  Also, students can explore campus and win prizes joining the Highlander Scavenger Hunt and go through the GSC Challenge Course.

8pm
Family Feud: Team up to play “the Feud” with other resident students in the Student Center Auditorium.

 

Sunday, August 18

3:00pm
Freshman Convocation: All incoming freshman will take part in this ceremony where they will officially join GSC’s community of scholars and affirm the Highlander EDGE.

4pm
Ice Cream Social: Following Convocation, students will enjoy ice cream on Lambdin Green with their fellow incoming Highlanders.

6 - 9pm
Sunday Night Highlander Luau: Get your grass skirts and flowery shirts ready for the start of the 19-20 school year by attending GSC’s Sunday night trip to the Hawaiian Islands with our Highlander Luau.  Enter the hula contest or sip on a fruity, mock tail drink.  Or, surf dive down one of our wet and wild water slides!  You don’t want to miss out!

 

Monday, August 19

8am - 2pm
Highlander Help Tables: Faculty, staff, and student leaders will staff information tables around campus to assist all Highlanders in finding their way around campus.  

11am - 2pm *This event has been rescheduled due to to weather*
Make Your Mark on Campus: Join this Highlander tradition as students use paint to make their mark on the wall inside the Highlander Tunnel.

10pm - Midnight
President’s Late Night Breakfast: Come to the Dining Hall and have President Nooks and members of the President’s Cabinet serve you breakfast as we celebrate the first night of the new academic year!

 

Tuesday, August 20

8am - 2pm
Highlander Help Tables: Faculty, staff, and student leaders will staff information tables around campus to assist all Highlanders in finding their way around campus. 

9am - 4pm
Office Open Houses: Stop by the Counseling Center, Career Services Center, and Student Success Center and meet the office staff and learn more about the services these areas offer.

Noon - 1pm
Dish with the Dean: Join your Dean of Students Dr. Matthew Robison for lunch in the Dining Hall and tell him about yourself and your experience at GSC. Dean Robison wants to hear from you!  

7 - 9pm
GSC Open Mic Night: Come to the GSC Amphitheater to showcase your talents in singing, poetry, dance, and other expressive arts to the campus community.

 

Wednesday, August 21

8am - 2pm
Highlander Help Tables: Faculty, staff, and student leaders will staff information tables around campus to assist all Highlanders in finding their way around campus. 

10am - 2pm
Campus Organizations Fair: On the Lambdin Green, explore GSC’s many registered student organizations. Don’t see the organization you’re looking for? Meet with the Office of Student Life and Recreation to see how you can start a new student organization at GSC. Get a free snow cone!

1:30 - 4:30pm
HIV and STD Screenings: In partnership with the Georgia Department of Public Health, stop by the Student Center for free and confidential HIV and Hep-C screenings.  Fun, food, and music by DJ Smooth! This event is FREE for all and is open to the community.

6:30 - 9pm
No Shame Theater:  No Shame Theatre is an uncensored evening of original performance that allows anyone to explore their creative potential. Signup begins at 6:30p.m. in the Fine Arts Auditorium, and the first 15 to sign up get a five-minute time slot to perform their original material. Admission is free. Performances can be anything--including, but not limited to: original plays, improvisation, spoken-word, rap, music, stand-up comedy, monologues, dance, spoons, interpretive sign-language, poetry, rants.

There are just three rules:

• All acts have to be original material.
• All acts have to be five minutes or less.
• You can’t break anything, including yourself, the space, or the law.

9pm - Midnight
SARC Game Night: Come to the SARC to meet new people and have fun while playing all of your favorite board and card games.

 

Thursday, August 22

11am - 2pm
GSC Corn Hole Tournament: Participate for fun or competitively on Lambdin Green against faculty, staff, and other students in corn hole—the nations’ favorite yard game. Throw bean bags to try and score points and knock your opponent’s points off of the board. Whoever gets to 15 points first wins!

6:30 - 7:30pm
Dish with the Dean: Join your Dean of Students Dr. Matthew Robison for dinner in the Dining Hall and tell him about yourself and your experience at GSC. Dean Robison wants to hear from you! 

7:30 - 10:00pm
Brother to Brother/AAMI Karaoke Night: Bring your singing voice to this campus-wide karaoke night in the Student Center Auditorium. This event is hosted and emceed by Brother to Brother, a registered student organization that takes pride in serving our campus and community through leadership and hard work.

 

Friday, August 23

Noon - 2pm
Setting your 19-20 “Vision” with the Student Government Association: Come to the Student Center Flex Room and create a vision board setting your course for the upcoming school year.  Want to get that 4.0? Want to confirm that summer ‘20 internship?  Map it out on your board!  While you’re crafting your board, meet your 19-20 SGA executive board members.

4 - 10pm
Highlander 3v3 Jamboree: Bring your two best friends and create a campus legacy in this kick-off intermural basketball tournament. Registration will be held all week, and the first teams will tip-off at 4pm. All participants must be current GSC students. Saturday, August 24

2 - 5pm
SGA Trip to Tanger Outlets: Need items for your residence hall room? Want to get a new fashion look for second week of class? Join SGA for an afternoon trip to Tanger! Sign up at https://www.signupgenius.com/go/805084BAFAA2DABFC1-gsctanger There are only 35 seats available for this trip. Email jtraylor1@gordonstate.edu for additional information.

6 - 7:30pm
Grocery Store Bingo: Students gather in the Student Center Auditorium to play Bingo to win groceries and snacks for their residence hall rooms.

7pm - 1am
Saturday Night Pool Party: Jump in to the coolest party on campus Saturday night and enjoy an evening of pool fun!

 

Sunday, August 25

3pm
Sunday Family Movie Matinee: Join GSC as we screen Disney’s “Aladdin” in the Student Center Auditorium. Feel free to bring the whole family for an afternoon of family fun!
