Gordon State College Club Football Program Builds on the Success of Its Inaugural Season
Gordon State College Club Football Program is set to build on the success of its inaugural season to a team of over 60 student-athletes for the upcoming season. The Highlanders will take the field in a nine-game schedule with four games at home and five away games. Each home game will kick-off at 7 p.m. at Lamar County Football Stadium. General admission for non-GSC attendees is $5. Students, faculty, and staff are invited to attend all home football games at no charge.
GSC will open the 2021 fall season with two away games. On Saturday, Sept. 9, the Highlanders’ first game will take place at Ramah JUCO Academy (S.C.), followed by a kickoff at Ohio State on Sept. 18.
The Highlanders’ first home game will be a showdown with Champion Prep on Saturday, Sept. 25. On Oct. 2, it’s another away game at Hocking College, followed by a pair of home games as the Highlanders take on Columbus State on Oct. 9, and South Carolina Faith A&M on Oct. 16.
GSU hits the road with one of two remaining away games for the fall season at Middle Georgia State University on Oct. 23. The 2021 fall season closes out with a home game featuring Florida Central Tech on Oct. 30, and an away game on Nov. 6, with the University of North Carolina, Greensboro.
GSC is also welcoming Kevin Adkins as the new head football coach. Born and raised in Montezuma, Georgia, Adkins graduated from Macon County High School and received a scholarship from Valdosta State University (VSU). He was a 4-year starter and a two-time All Gulf South first team selection helping to earn a 2004 Division II National Championship. Adkins graduated from VSU with a Bachelor’s in Business Administration with a major in management. After graduation, Adkins played arena football for the Oklahoma City Yard Dawgz.
“I look forward to the upcoming season of Gordon State College football! I can’t wait to cheer on our student-athletes as they compete and win on the field and excel and succeed in the classroom,” said Dr. Matthew Robison, GSC Dean of Students. “Under Head Coach Adkins’ leadership, GSC’s football program will continue to promote and nurture good sportsmanship, healthy athletic competition, and strong academic achievement.”
Adkins began his coaching career at Dutchtown High School as a defensive back coach. After one year, he was promoted to Defensive Coordinator for Elite Performer Sports Academy where his defense only surrendered 7.6 points per game during his tenure. Adkins left and took on the defensive coordinator position at Point University and led his unit to a top 10 ranking. In 2019, Adkins coached at Christian Community College.
“Our team will live-out the Highlander EDGE both on and off the playing field as we help our athletes succeed academically and assist us in competing for the club football National Championship,” said Kevin Adkins, GSC head football coach.
