GSC’s Loper Featured as USG Board of Regents Observes Academic Recognition Day

The Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia (USG) honored 26 students who best represent the system’s highest scholastic ideals for Academic Recognition Day 2021 and Gordon State College is proud to recognize Dequarious Loper as its recipient.

“I’m more than honored to be awarded as it shows the effort and hard work I and others did to be recognized by the USG,” said Loper, who is a Human Services major and a Class of 2023. “I was only able to achieve (this honor) with the help of others who also persevered. This is how true leaders are made!”

Each of the system’s institutions selected a student with a 4.0 GPA who also reflects the system’s best qualities. These students strive for excellence and have the ability to share knowledge in various areas of expertise.

“Dequarious Loper is a student who sought to overcome the obstacles and challenges endured during the COVID-19 and excelled academically,” said Dr. Kirk A. Nooks, GSC President. “Dequarious has displayed the qualities of the Highlander EDGE – Engaged Innovators, Dedicated Scholars, Gifted Communicators and Ethical Leaders – and we are honored that he is representing the Highlander Nation.”

Academic Recognition Day began 33 years ago as a celebration of Georgia students’ academic achievement. The honorees receive a resolution from the Georgia House of Representatives along with a letter of commendation from USG Chancellor Steve Wrigley.

In his letter of commendation, Chancellor Wrigley congratulated the honorees for achieving academic excellence in spite of challenging circumstances.

“During a difficult academic year, you have seized the opportunity to build upon an incredibly valuable time in your life and lay a foundation for success far beyond your chosen field of study,” Wrigley said in a USG release recognizing all recipients statewide. “You did not let the challenges of the pandemic hinder your academic performance, and we celebrate your achievement.”
