Gordon State College Hosts Spring 2021 Commencement Ceremony

Gordon State College hosted its in-person spring commencement ceremony on Friday, May 14 at Summers Field Park in Barnesville as more than 500 graduates from the summer and fall of 2020 and the spring of 2021 were recognized.

This socially-distanced event marked the first commencement for GSC at Summers Field Park and the first in-person ceremony for the College since December 2019.

“Throughout the past 14 months, Gordon State College has endured the COVID-19 pandemic and continued to provide a successful learning environment for its students and faculty,” said Dr. Kirk A. Nooks, President of Gordon State College. “Today was a special time to recognize the achievements of these women and men of Highlander Nation.”

The morning ceremony highlighted graduates from the School of Business, Liberal Arts, and Social Sciences and the keynote speaker was Gordon State College Foundation Trustee Dan White.

The afternoon ceremony highlighted graduates from the School of Education, Mathematics, and Applied Sciences along with the School of Nursing, Health and Natural Sciences and the keynote speaker was GSC graduate Justin Gunnels, who is currently a teacher in Lamar County and is earning his doctorate in education.

This historic day also featured a Book & Bell Ceremony in the GSC Fine Arts Auditorium and a Nurse Pinning Ceremony in the GSC Student Activity and Recreation Center.

“We are so excited to be able to celebrate our commencement face-to-face,” said Dr. C. Jeffery Knighton, Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs. “Our graduates have worked very hard this past year, during unprecedented times, and deserve to have their achievement recognized in person.”
