Gordon State College to Host Commencement Ceremony in May

Gordon State College will hold an in-person spring commencement ceremony on Friday, May 14 at Summers Field Park in Barnesville.

More than 500 summer/fall 2020 and spring 2021 graduates will be recognized in socially-distanced ceremonies beginning at 8:30 a.m. and continuing through 3 p.m.

The schedule for the day is as follows:

• 8:30-10:00 a.m. – Graduation for School of Business, Liberal Arts, and Social Sciences

• 10:30 a.m. – Book & Bell Ceremony (to be held in Fine Arts Auditorium)

• 1:00-2:30 p.m. – Graduation for School of Education, Mathematics, and Applied Sciences; Graduation for School of Nursing, Health and Natural Sciences

• 3:00 p.m. – Nursing Pinning Ceremony (to be held in the Student Activity and Recreation Center)

“Throughout the past 13 months, Gordon State College has endured the COVID-19 pandemic and continued to provide a successful learning environment for its students and faculty,” said Dr. Kirk A. Nooks, President of Gordon State College. “On May 14, it will be a special time to recognize the achievements of these women and men of Highlander Nation.”

The morning ceremony will highlight graduates from the School of Business, Liberal Arts, and Social Sciences and the keynote speaker will be Gordon State College Foundation Trustee Dan White.

The afternoon ceremony will highlight graduates from the School of Education, Mathematics, and Applied Sciences along with the School of Nursing, Health and Natural Sciences and the keynote speaker will be Gordon State College Graduate Justin Gunnels, who is currently a teacher in Lamar County and is earning his doctorate in education.

“We are so excited to be able to celebrate commencement face-to-face,” said Dr. C. Jeffery Knighton, Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs. “Our graduates have worked very hard this past year, during unprecedented times, and deserve to have their achievement recognized in person.”
