Gordon State Announces Regina Lewis-Ward Empowerment Scholarship

The Gordon State College Foundation, Inc. is pleased to announce the Regina Lewis-Ward Empowerment Scholarship, which has been established by Georgia House of Representatives member Regina Lewis-Ward.

Serving Georgia’s District 109, which covers parts of the GSC’s 14-county primary service region, Ms. Lewis-Ward’s generosity has led to this scholarship being created for the students at Gordon State College. This ongoing $1,000 scholarship will be awarded each fall semester to a deserving student.

“This scholarship is something that I have been planning to do for a long time and now the dream is becoming a reality,” Lewis-Ward said. “I am thankful to the administration at Gordon State College for providing me with this opportunity to advance a student’s education.”

General criteria for the scholarship includes the applicant residing in Georgia’s House District 109, which includes areas in Newton County, Rockdale County and Henry County; evidence of community service and volunteer activities; representing an underrepresented group in public service; and must be pursuing an Associate of Arts degree in political science or a Bachelor of Arts in Interdisciplinary Studies - Public Services Track.

“We are grateful for the gift that Rep. Lewis-Ward has provided Gordon State College,” said GSC President Dr. Kirk A. Nooks said. “Her generosity speaks to her desire to make a difference within this region. This philanthropic act is another demonstration of ‘The Power of WE.’ ”

Lewis-Ward (D) was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., and earned a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration in computer science from Bernard M. Baruch College and a master’s of Arts in political science from Clayton State University.

Lewis-Ward’s career experiences include working as a shop steward with the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME), a writer of children’s books and serving as an adjunct political science instructor.
