Gordon State College to Celebrate Homecoming

Gordon State College is celebrating Homecoming the week of February 17 with five days of events that includes a homecoming court, tailgating and a basketball game halftime event that could result in a student winning a $5,000 scholarship.

“We want the students, alumni, and community to get to know Gordon State College all over again,” said Sharon Lloyd, GSC Director of Student Activities. “We have packed the week with a wide variety of activities that will appeal to everyone.”

The week “steps off”  Sunday with the “Show Up and Show Out Step Competition” at 7 p.m. in Alumni Memorial Hall. The Homecoming Court featuring Mr. and Ms.Freshman, Mr. and Ms. Sophomore and Mr. and Ms. Gordon State will be introduced to the crowd.

Tickets for the Homecoming Step Show are $5 for students with their GSCID and $10 without ID. The winner will take home $500 in cash.

On Monday the Student Activity and Recreation Center will be decorated with banners created by clubs and organizations across campus. Students will vote on their favorite banners Feb. 18-20, and the winners will be announced at Wednesday’s basketball game.  The club that receives the most votes for their banner will be awarded $250. Monday’s theme is  Pajama Day for students.

A Block Party is part of Tuesday’s activities and features a Lip Sync Battle in Alumni Memorial Hall from 8 to 10 p.m. with more music by @DJC3NTURii from 10 p.m. to midnight. The event is free.

On Wednesday the fun moves to the Student Activity and Recreation Center with tailgating on the SARC Patio starting at 5 p.m. featuring grilled hot dogs, an assortment of games, and the faculty/staff Homecoming Chili Cook Off judged by students.

“The Highlander Tailgate is a place for the entire Gordon State Community to come together to pump up GSC as they get ready to take on our tough rival-- Ga. Highlands,” said Jeremy Monroe, Student Activities Program Coordinator.

The action moves inside the SARC Arena for the 7:30 p.m. tip off between your Gordon State Highlanders and Ga. Highlands.  Tickets for the game are $10 per person and free for students, alumni, faculty, and staff.

During halftime of the basketball game, students will have the opportunity to become a finalist in the  Zaxby’s – Gordon State Ultimate Fowl Shot contest that offers the winner a $5,000 scholarship to attend Gordon State College.

Wednesday is Spirit Day with students, faculty, and staff invited to wear their favorite Gordon State apparel.

The week’s activities conclude Thursday with a Homecoming Concert in Alumni Memorial Hall featuring Major Things, Caulfield Band, and Vizion.

Doors open at 7 p.m. and the music gets underway at 7:30 p.m. Admission for students, faculty, and staff is a canned food item for others admission is  $5 and a canned food item. The canned food item will go to the GSC food pantry, Harry’s Helping Hand.
