Dr. Victor Vilchiz is joining the Gordon State College faculty as Dean of the School of Nursing and Health and Natural Sciences.

He will begin his position on July 1.

Dr. Vilchiz most recently served as Head of the Department of Chemistry at Virginia State University, while simultaneously serving as Special Assistant to the Dean of the College of Natural and Health Sciences.  In addition, Dr. Vilchiz has served as Faculty Senate Chair, Chair of the General Education Committee, contributed to the QEP and played an active role with accreditation.

He has also taught at California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo, and University of Southern California, Los Angeles.

He says he was attracted to Gordon State because of the family atmosphere he experienced on his visits to campus.

“I see this as an opportunity to help Gordon State College and its students move forward,” said Vilchiz.

A native of Tijuana, Mexico Vilchiz says he decided on a career as a chemist in the 8th grade.

“It was a chemistry experiment that set me on my path but great faculty mentors that kept me on track,” he said.

He, his wife Elizabeth and their 6-year-old son, Nathan, plan to purchase a house in Griffin.

“Dr. Vilchiz brings a wealth of higher education knowledge to his new role, having more than 20 years of experience working at the college level,” said Dr. Jeffrey Knighton, provost and vice president for Academic Affairs. “We are glad to have him as a part of our Highlander family.”
