GSC 2019-20 Academic Year Begins Aug.19
More than 3,000 students are expected on the Gordon State College campus Monday, Aug. 19 for the start of the 2019-20 academic year.
Freshman resident students will move into campus housing on Thursday, Aug. 15, while other students will move in Sunday, Aug. 18. Gordon houses more than 900 students on campus.
“We are looking forward to an academic year that challenges students in the classrooms but also provides opportunities for them to grow as young adults,” said GSC President Kirk A. Nooks. “These students will carry the Gordon legacy forward as productive members of society fully understanding of The Power of We.”
Kicking off the academic year are Welcome Week activities for all students that include a Welcome Barbecue, Academic Success Day, and a Saturday Freshman Community Plunge. During the “Plunge,” students will participate in a morning of community service in the area around campus.
Freshman Convocation will be held Sunday, Aug. 18 at 3 p.m. in the SARC. During Convocation freshmen students will officially join Gordon’s community of scholars and affirm the Highlander EDGE – Engaged Innovators, Dedicated Scholars, Gifted Communicators, Ethical Leaders.
In celebration of the first day of class, students are invited to enjoy the “President’s Late Night Breakfast.” As he did last year, Nooks, assisted by members of the administration, will be serving a late night breakfast to celebrate the first day of the academic year.
New this year, students will have a choice of purchasing meals through Sodexo, the primary food service provider across campus, as well as the opportunity to purchase food items from Chick-fil-A Mondays-Thursdays from 11-1. Chick-fil-A will be located in the Student Center adjacent to the GSC Bookstore entrance.
