Gordon State College Offers Youth Summer Camps
Gordon State College Community Education is offering a variety of exciting and enriching summer camps starting in June.
In June there will be Basketball Camp, Camp Science Explorer, Soccer Camp, Softball Camp, and Tennis Camp. In July the new Nike Baseball Camp, S.T.E.A.M. Camp for Middle Schoolers, and the Performing Arts Camp will take place.
The Basketball Summer Camp will be taught by Gordon State College Men's Basketball Coach, Bruce Capers, a former Harlem Globetrotter. This camp is June 3-7 for boys and girls ages 7-14. This camp not only helps develop individual skill levels, it also addresses character education. Students will learn life skills, anti-bullying prevention, conflict resolution, critical thinking, and more.
Camp Science Explorer is for boys and girls from pre-K through 5th grade. Pre-K thru first grade will meet June 3-7, second and third graders will meet June 10-14, and fourth and fifth graders will meet June 17-21.
This camp provides a structured environment with different interactive experiences. Campers will participate in experiments and projects. The goal of this camp is to teach children about the natural world and how it works.
The Soccer Summer Camp will be taught by Gordon State College Women’s Soccer coach, Scott Henderson. This is a four day camp. The available dates are June 10-13 and June 17-20. This camp is for boys and girls ages 6 and up. This is a game oriented camp which is dedicated to developing a player’s full potential. Players are grouped by skill level, from beginner to advanced, for this camp.
The Softball Summer Camp will be held June 10-13. Girls age 6-10 will meet from 9 a.m. until 12 noon. Girls aged 11-14 will meet from 2 p.m.-5 p.m. This camp will cover all the aspects of the game, including actual game training and more. The motto for this camp is “The Four Days that Made a Difference in My Game.”
Tennis camp begins June 24 for youth ages 10-18. This camp is for beginners and intermediate players with an emphasis on technique. Campers will learn score keeping, serving, volleying, backhand, and other important tennis skills. This camp emphasizes good sportsmanship and proper tennis etiquette
In July Gordon State College Community Education will offer three additional camps.
A summer Nike Baseball camp has been added to this year’s lineup of camps. This camp starts on July 7. Gordon State College Baseball coach Travis McClanahan will be leading this U.S. Sports camp event. Campers age 9-17 will receive personalized training from McClanahan and college-age instructors. Personal goal setting and preparing for college baseball will be topics that are discussed during this hands on active camp. All Nike Baseball camp participants will receive a Nike Baseball Camp Graduation Certificate.
The Summer S.T.E.A.M. Camp for Middle Schoolers begins on July 8. This camp is centered on science, technology, engineering, and math plus art. Campers will learn how to problem solve, discover new things, participate in hands-on experiments, and be creative. This camp will help prepare middle schoolers for their next school year.
The Performing Arts Camp starts on July 15. This camp, which is run by Kim Ozier, is for children ages 6-12. Campers will learn about theater and dance while being creative and artistic. This is a camp that teaches musical theater and visual arts. The camp will culminate with a performance of “The Lion King.”
Gordon State College Community Education will also offer private swimming lessons and extended tutoring hours over the summer.
