Argo Named Gordon State College Director of Athletics

Gordon State College recently named Steve Argo as Director of Athletics (AD). Argo is currently the Development Officer for GSC and will continue to fill that role in addition to AD. As the AD Argo’s primary responsibilities will be to supervise and direct GSC's intercollegiate athletics program and activities. This role includes providing leadership and supervision for the coaches and support staff of GSC’s four varsity sports; Baseball, Men’s Basketball, Women’s Soccer and Softball.
Argo said, “First of all, I want to thank Gordon State College President Kirk A. Nooks and his leadership team for the opportunity to move into the position of Director of Athletics. I also look forward to maintaining my responsibilities as Development Officer with the Office of Advancement, External Relations and Marketing as we continue to connect Gordon State College with our alumni, friends and donors – especially in the communities of our 14-county service region.”
Argo has spent more than 25 years of his career in college athletics administration and eventually became involved in higher education fundraising.
Vice President of Advancement, External Relations and Marketing & Executive Director of the Foundation Montrese Adger Fuller said, “I am very excited about this great opportunity for Steve Argo. He has extensive knowledge and a strong Athletics background. I am confident that the Athletics Program will have continued success under Steve’s leadership.”
Before working at GSC Argo served as the Development Officer for Athletics and Parent Programs at Georgia College & State University in Milledgeville, Ga. During his tenure at GCSU, Argo generated new opportunities for endowed scholarships for Bobcats’ Athletics and collaborated on a successful direct-mail campaign and crowd-funding initiative. Argo spearheaded a Parent Leadership Council at GCSU and worked closely with the College of Business Dean’s Parent Advisory Council. Both programs generated support for the University and created parent involvement in University outreach.
Vice President for Enrollment Management and Student Affairs Dr. John Head said, “We are so excited to have Steve take on this role at Gordon State College. He has a wealth of experience with college athletics, having served at the institutional level, and then also having worked with two different athletic conferences. His commitment to the development of the whole student-athlete, his desire to promote GSC Athletics to the community, and his fund-raising skills address all our goals for GSC Athletics.”
Argo will also be responsible for building an intercollegiate athletics program that is defined by a holistic approach to educating students who are driven to achieve in the classroom, on the field or in the arena, and in society. In addition, enhancing the sports communications outreach of GSC Athletics to promote the four varsity sports through the accomplishments of the coaches and student-athletes.
Argo said, “I believe that an effective and efficient intercollegiate athletics program can be a catalyst to increase enrollment and bring positive brand awareness to an institution like Gordon State College. I look forward to working with our coaches, student-athletes, administration, faculty, staff and students at GSC to build an overall athletics program that is representative of the institution’s mission, vision and values.”
Argo is a native of Athens, Ga., and graduated from the University of Georgia with a Bachelor of Science in Education. He and his wife, Jane, are parents to three grown sons, Chase, Collin and Cam and one grandson, Isom Chase, born last November.
