Basketball Season Opens Tuesday

Gordon State College Basketball Coach Bruce Capers can sum up the upcoming season in three words.

"Exciting and challenging."

The Highlanders will play the first game of the 2014-15 season Tuesday, Nov. 4 when it hosts American Basketball Institute at Alumni Memorial Hall.

Tip-off is at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are available at the door.

"I am really looking forward to this season," said Capers who was named head coach last July. "I'm new, many of the players are new and our goal is to get better every day in order to make the playoffs. It's going to be an exciting and challenging year."

While the team is coming together as a unit, height is no problem for the Highlanders this year.

The shortest players are 5'10 guards Aquavious Young, Decatur, Ga. and Dennis Young-Coleman, from Marietta, Ga. They are joined by Andre Peterkin, a 6'10 sophomore center, who is also co-captain of the team.

"We're growing together and becoming stronger together," Peterkin said. "We're learning from each other, and what we are learning is solidifying us as a team."

The Highlanders will host Tallahassee CC on Thursday, Nov. 6 at 7 p.m. and then Southern Crescent Technical College at home on Saturday, Nov. 8. At 6 p.m.
