Proctoring Options for Online Courses

Proctoring Options for Online Courses

Most Gordon State College online courses will require a proctored examination. In a proctored exam, someone monitors the student as he/she completes the exam. Gordon State has two options for proctoring exams. One option allows for the electronic use of monitoring. The other involves live monitoring via a testing center.

Since Gordon State College does not charge an e-tuition, students are required to pay for the proctoring service (for either option). The price often depends on the length of the exam.

Option 1: ProctorU

ProctorU is an electronic proctoring system that allows students to complete their exams from any location. In order to use ProctorU, the student will need:

  • desktop or laptop computer (tablets, chromebooks, smartphones are not sufficient)
  • webcam
  • speakers
  • internet access

The student will have to test in an enclosed room without others present.

The process for using ProctorU is:

  1. The instructor completes the testing form with ProctorU.
  2. The student logs into their ProctorU account (on the navigation bar of D2L, under "Tools/Resources") and searches the name of the exam.
  3. The student selects an appointment time to complete the exam.
  4. The student is prompted to pay as the appointment is made. The appointment will not be confirmed until payment is provided.
  5. At the time of the appointment, the student logs into D2L AND ProctorU. The student connects with the live proctor via ProctorU.
  6. The proctor will download software to allow him/her to view the screen and webcam of the student's computer. This software stays on the student's computer only during the time of the exam.
  7. The student will show two forms of government ID, answer security questions, and conduct a room scan (to show that prohibited materials are not present).
  8. The proctor will input the password to the exam.
  9. The student will complete the exam. When finished, the student will log out of D2L and then disconnect from the proctor.

Option 2: Testing Centers

Students have the ability to complete their proctored exam in a testing center. Gordon State College has a testing center on the second floor of the Student Center. Other campuses also have testing centers or provide proctoring services.

The process for using a testing center is:

  1. The student researches and locates the testing center he/she would like to utilize. The student should contact the testing center to discuss related fees and the scheduling process.
  2. The student completes the Gordon State College Proctoring Request form. The form is located below in a PDF.
    • Gordon State College Proctoring Request Form (pdf) After clicking on the form, choose the download (arrow) button in the top right corner of the screen. This will open the fillable pdf. After completing the form, save it to your computer to send to the proctor.
  3. After completing his/her portion, the student provides the testing center with the Gordon State Proctoring Request form. The proctor completes the form and sends it back to the student.
  4. The student sends the completed Gordon State College Proctoring Request form to the instructor.
  5. If the instructor approves the testing center, he/she will complete the Gordon State College Testing Specifications form and send it to the proctor. This form will provide the proctor with the details regarding the exam. The form is located below in a PDF.
    • Gordon State College Testing Specifications Form (pdf) Since this is a faculty form only, faculty will be prompted to log in with their Gordon email username and password. After the form opens, choose the download (arrow) button in the top right corner of the screen. This will open the fillable pdf. After completing the form, save it to your computer to send to the proctor.
  6. Now that the testing center is approved, the student will communicate with the testing center to confirm an appointment and payment.
