Panopto for Faculty

Panopto is a video hosting and creation platform available to Gordon State faculty & students in order to create instructional videos or projects. This program is integrated within Brightspace by D2L.

As an instructor, how do I access Panopto?

It depends on what you want to do. There are different areas to pull in your video based upon if you wanting to just share a video, have the students complete a quiz within the Panopto video, or have students submit a video that they created. All of this, however, can be done within Brightspace by D2L.

What are some of the main features within Panopto?

When creating a video with Panopto, you can:
  • Create an instructional video using audio, video, and/or multiple screens (videos of your screen, powerpoint, other files, etc.)
  • Edit and trim sections of the video
  • Auto-generate captions for the video
  • Add in title slides (bookmarks) to your video so that students can jump to specific parts of the video
  • Add in quiz questions so that the video will pause and ask questions. The scores on these quiz questions will be reported to the D2L gradebook.
  • Allow students to search the video using key terms to jump to that part of the video

As the instructor, I want to embed a video into D2L but I do not have a quiz embedded into the video.

In that case, this instructional video will show you how to pull in the Panopto faculty block and create a video without a quiz.

As the instructor, I want to embed a video into D2L. This video does have a quiz in it and I would like for it to count in the D2L gradebook.

In that case, this instructional video will show you how to pull in the faculty block, create a video, add in the quiz, and connect it to a grade item in D2L.

As the instructor, I want my students to submit a video that they have created using Panopto into D2L.

In that case, this instructional video will show you how to create an assignment/discussion area and how students will submit their Panopto video to it.

How do you my students view the Panopto video, take a quiz, and use the bookmarks/slides to skip around in the video?

This video will review how a student would watch and interact within a Panopto video in D2L.

I want my students to create a Panopto video to submit into D2L. What resources should I give to them?

If the student is going to make a standard video to be viewed by just the instructor or classmates within the class (without a quiz embedded), you can share this video with them.

If the student is working on a special project in which he/she is going to create a video to be viewed by those outside of the class/college and/or need to embed a quiz within the video, you can share this resource with them.
