Parameters

The Student Demographics tab uses 2 parameters to select data population to display.

1) Dataset – OIR creates static copies of key Banner data to allow display and analysis of student data for specific times in the past.  Datasets consist of semester and dataset type.  Only one dataset may be selected at a time.
Semester – The semester portion of a dataset indicates the term for which the data was copied.
Type – There a 3 types of datasets.

  1. ODS is an operation dataset for currently active semesters and is updated/overwritten every 4 hours beginning at 7am each day.  An active semester is one with classes being taught or registration in progress.  The ODS dataset is for internal evaluation of institutional operations and should not be used to compare GSC to reporting data from USG, IPEDS, etc.
  2. MTC is the mid-term census dataset that is copied at the time GSC submits Census Date 1 data to the USG system office.  MTC data is static and remains even after semester is no longer active.  The MTC dataset can be used for historical review of GSC operations and comparison to reporting from USG, IPEDS, etc.
  3. EOT is the end of term dataset that is copied at the time GSC GSC submits it Census Date 2 data to USG. The EOT dataset can be used for historical review of GSC operations and comparison to reporting from USG, IPEDS, etc.

2) Campus - The campus parameter allows display and analysis of student data for a specific campus or unduplicated enrollment across all campuses.  Only one campus or All may be selected at a time.  The list of available campuses will vary based on the semester selected through the Dataset parameter.

Quick Fact Objects

The Quick Fact Objects below are displayed to provide aggregated information for the selected population.  Each object’s display is composed of a horizontal bar graph displaying the unduplicated Headcount of several categiries within that object.  For example, the By Age object displays information for 5 distinct age groups.  At the far right of each element bar, there is a numeric indicator for the percent of the object total for that element.  Also within each bar is a vertical solid line which indicates the number of FTEs for that element.

  • Tables for Headcount, Credit Hours and FEs - Tables show stated statistics by Class Level and Housing Status.
  • By Age: Age categories are based on student age on the first day of semester from the Banner form STVTERM.
  • By Adult Learner: Adult Learner is consistent with the USG definition of being 25 years of age or older at the student’s first term of enrollment.
  • By Ethnicity: Ethnicity categories are consistent with the definitions from USG and IPEDS.  Race/Ethnicity is self-reported by the student.
  • By Gender: Gender categories are based on student Person data found on the SPAIDEN Banner form.
  • By Credit Hours: Credit hours categories are based on student enrollment at time data is extracted from Banner and all classes where credit hours are accrued.  Credit hours from all on-campus and off-campus sites are included regardless of parameter selection and filtering.
  • By Enrollment Status: Enrollment status is determined based on total credit hours a student is enrolled in at time data is extracted from Banner.  Less than 12 hours is considered Part-time and 12 or more hours is considered Full-time.  Credit hours from all on-campus and off-campus sites are included regardless of parameter selection and filtering.
  • By Class: Class category is based on student’s total accumulated hours earned and current enrolled hours.  Break points for each class are FR 0-29, SO 30-59, JR 60-89 and SR 90 and above.  Based on credit hours from all on-campus and off-campus sites are included regardless of parameter selection and filtering.
  • By Degree: Degrees are based on student curriculum information found on the SGASTDN Banner form for the semester of the dataset chosen.  Since a student may declare 2 programs of study, the headcounts for this object can be duplicated resulting in a total that is greater than the Unduplicated Headcount.
  • By Learning Support Requirement: Number of requirements is based on student non-course requirements found on the SHANCRS Banner form for the semester of the dataset chosen.
  • By Geographic Region (Origin): Geographic region of origination is based on student information found on the ZOARESI Banner form.  County of origin is used to for in-state students and categorized as Atlanta Metro County (based on the 20XX US Census 29 county list for the Atlanta Metro Statistical Area) or Other Georgia County.  Students with origin outside of Georgia area categorized as either Out of State or International based on their Banner information (International origins are coded as “ZZ” on the ZOARESI Banner form).
  • By Student Type: Student type is based on the student type found on the SGASTDN Banner form for the semester selected.
  • By Housing Status: Housing status is based on an Active Room assignment on the SLARASG Banner form for the selected semester.  Note that the Quick Facts dashboard only includes registered students.  There may be unregistered students with Active Room assignments.
  • By First Generation Status - First Generation status is based on the student attribute entered by admissions.
  • By STEM Classification -  STEM Classification is based the students major. If any of a students majors CIPC code is considered a STEM major they are included in the STEM classification. If none of the majors a student has declared are considered STEM they are included in the Non-STEM classification.
  • County of Origin: All counties of origin, defined as a student’s resident county at time of application, with a minimum of 5 students in the dataset and selected filters selected are displayed in descending order from left to right on the vertical bar graph.  Georgia counties will only list the county name.  Non-Georgia counties will list county name and two character state abbreviation.  International origins will be categorized as Not Reported.
  • By Major or Pathway to Baccalaureate Degree: Majors and Baccalaureate Pathways will be based on the student curriculum information found on the SGASTDN Banner form for the semester of the dataset chosen.  Since a student may declare 2 programs of study, the headcounts for this object can be duplicated resulting in a total that is greater than the Unduplicated Headcount.

Interactive Filters

The Quick Facts Dashboard interactively allows the viewer to filter or select information to display.  The filter is activated by clicking (selecting) a single data element on any of the Quick Fact Objects displayed on the dashboard.  Multiple elements can be selected by Control Clicking (hold down the CTRL key while clicking) elements.  For example, to filter the display to only Male students, click on the word Male under the By Gender object.  To further filter the information to only Males in the 18-21 age group, hold down CTRL and click the 18-21 group under the By Age object.

As filters are applied, the element selected will highlight and the unselected elements will dither (or dim).

To clear the selected filters, click each selected element until all are cleared.

Tool Tips

The Quick Facts Dashboard provides detailed information for each element in a Tool Tip whenever the mouse hovers over information elements (bar graph, number, etc).  As the mouse is moved to hover over different elements, the Tool Tip will update to reflect the current element.
