The Late Gov. Miller Helped Celebrate Gordon’s Growth

03-28-2018

The late Zell Miller visited Gordon State College many times during his term as Governor. On Aug. 10, 1993, Miller assisted in the groundbreaking for the Fine Arts Building. The photo shows, from left, the late  Quimby Melton, at the time a member of the Foundation, looking on as Miller addresses the crowd. Seated to the right is former Foundation Chair and current Barnesville Mayor Peter Banks and former Gordon President Jerry Williamson. The eagle sculpture, given to the college by Chic-fil-A founder Truett Cathy, is displayed in the entry of the Fine Arts building. One year later on Aug. 17, 1994, Miller returned to campus to participate in the groundbreaking for Melton Hall. Miller, at left, and Williamson used garden plows to break the ground. Banks and Foundation member Dallis Copeland look on. Many students attended Gordon State College utilizing the HOPE Scholarship which was established by Miller in 1992. Miller served as lieutenant governor, Governor and U.S. Senator. Miller’s State Funeral and private burial service are today. He died March 23.
