Gordon State Joins USG European Council

09-26-2017

Gordon State College has joined the University System of Georgia European Council which opens a world of study abroad opportunities for students.

The European Council is one of five regional councils operating under the auspices of the System Council for International Education of the University System of Georgia.

The EC seeks to foster greater understanding and appreciation of the cultures and societies of Europe by sponsoring programs and activities for the University System of Georgia's students, faculty and institutions.

International study is nothing new to Gordon State College. Dr. Karen Guffey has taught a program in Barcelona for the past 17 summers while Dr. Christy Flatt taught in Costa Rica the last two summers. A program of study in Peru is in the planning stages for summer 2018.

“The USG program, as well as the study abroad programs we offer on campus, are an excellent way for students to enhance their education by experiencing the culture and people of another country,” said Flatt. “By becoming a member of the European Council, more travel opportunities are available.”

European Council courses are taught largely by faculty from USG colleges and universities and students blend classroom experiences with group and individual travel as they earn academic credit at their home institution. The courses last from 2 to 5 weeks.

For Summer 2018, the USG European Council has study-abroad trips – all open to Gordon State College students – slated for Berlin, Edinburgh, London, Madrid, Paris, St. Petersburg and Waterford, Ireland next summer.
