Gordon State Awarded Mathematics and Science Partnership Grant

10-05-2017

Gordon State College has been awarded a Mathematics and Science Partnerships (MSP) grant from the Georgia Department of Education.

The $93,000 grant will allow Gordon faculty to partner with Henry County educators to increase student academic achievement in mathematics and science by improving content knowledge and teaching skills of mathematics and science teachers.

This is the third MSP grant awarded to Gordon State College and the second MSP grant Gordon State has been awarded to work with teachers in Henry County. Gordon State was previously awarded a MSP grant to work with Lamar County elementary science and mathematics teachers.

Last summer Gordon State faculty facilitated a two-week workshop for 3rd, 4th and 5th grade teachers in both public and private schools in Henry County. The workshop materials were developed by Gordon State faculty and included hands-on learning activities that teachers took back to the classroom with the goal of achieving greater understanding and student engagement in mathematics and science.

“We are so honored to be awarded the MSP grant,” said Dr. Michael Mahan, dean of the Gordon State College School of Education and MSP Project Director. “The grant allows the School of Education to fulfill its mission of working closely with K-12 educators and school age children in this region.”
