2014 Fall Semester Classes Begin Aug. 13 at Gordon State College
Gordon State College resident students will begin moving in on-campus housing Monday and Tuesday, Aug. 11 and 12, with all students expected back on campus for another exciting academic year Wednesday, Aug. 13.
"We're looking forward to another great year and warmly welcome all the new and returning students," said Tamara Boatwright, Gordon State College public information officer. "We have a wide variety of campus activities, clubs and events, our sports season opens soon as do our theater and concert seasons. With college completion always in view, we have a faculty and staff dedicated to providing Gordon students an excellent education and campus experience. It's a beautiful and exciting campus with a lot going on."
Of the 4,000 or so students anticipated this academic year, approximately 900 will call campus home with the other 3,000 or so driving to campus. As they were last year, student parking lots are open to all students. One exception is the lot on Florida Avenue which is designated only for students who carry a 4.0 GPA. Vehicle dashboard hang tags are still required of all students who park on campus.
“Not even faculty and staff will be allowed to park in the Florida Avenue lot,” said Gordon State College Police Chief Jeff Mason. “We have determined that there is adequate campus parking for students, faculty and staff throughout campus. It may not be what one would consider convenient, but the spaces are there.”
“We recommend that everyone give themselves a little more time the first week or so of classes to acclimate to driving on campus and to be extra aware of other drivers and pedestrians," said Boatwright. “And we ask that everyone use the improved designated crossing areas when walking from the parking areas to campus locations. College Drive, the main thoroughfare through campus, can get very busy at times.”
And a friendly reminder that the Gordon State College campus is a tobacco-free campus. No tobacco products, including e-cigarette products, can be used anywhere on campus.
Returning and new students will notice that construction on the Student Activity and Recreation Center is well under way. The building is expected to be completed in early 2015.
Work is also under way on the interior of the Hightower Library to refresh its interior and make it more user-friendly.
Gordon State College, a state college in the University System of Georgia, offers four-year degrees in Early Childhood Education, English, Math, Biology, History, Nursing, Health Information Management and Human Services.
