Middle Grades Education Program

The Bachelor of Science in Middle Grades Education is the newest of the programs in the School of Education at Gordon State College. The program was approved by the Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia in 2015. The program also received accreditation through the Professional Standards Commission of Georgia and approval to admit students into the program beginning in the spring semester of 2016.  he program of study focuses on preparing candidates for a future in the Middle School classrooms of today. The successful candidates will earn a teaching certificate in the State of Georgia for grades 4-8 in a minimum of two concentration areas. The concentration areas are as follows:  Language Arts, Mathematics, Reading (Literacy), Science, and Social Science.

In response to the needs of partner school districts in this region, Gordon State College’s School of Education requires that all candidates accepted into the Middle Grades Education program must choose one of the following areas as a concentration. Mathematics, Reading (Literacy), or Science. The College’s partner school districts have indicated that the most pressing need for this region of the state is for the science, math, and literacy teachers.

Prospective teacher education candidates must meet admission requirements in order to be admitted into the School of Education in the junior year. Coursework includes a combination of pedagogical study in education and continued mastery of specific content coursework. Fieldwork hours are required leading up to the final semester of student-teaching in a partner school district.
