It looked promising at the start as Gordon State College took a quick 3 - 0 lead against conference foe Darton State in Albany. However, the Tuesday evening contest went south in a hurry for the Highlanders after the first two innings. The Cavaliers added four runs in the bottom of the third for a 4 - 3 advantage. Darton State would seal the game with three runs each in the fourth, seventh, and eighth innings to blast GSC 13 - 3 in the first game of the series. If Friday's game was any indication, Head Coach Travis McClanahan had to like his chances of winning the three-game series against Northwest Florida State College. In Game One, Gordon State College put four runs on the board in the first inning and never looked back as they won 7 - 1. Sophomore Tyler Hutch picked up three hits while Dylan Dore, Chase Johnson, and Jesus Monserrat each had two hits in the contest. It's been a tough start to the 2014 spring baseball season for Gordon State College. After four straight road trips to Florida, the final stop in Marianna finally paid off for the Highlanders. The great competition had hampered the bats and GSC found themselves with nine straight losses. However, the sun finally shined on Head Coach Travis McClanahan's team as they turned the tables on #7 Chipola College and won the three-game series against the Indians over the weekend. After starting with a disappointing 10 - 0 loss on Friday, the Highlanders came right back with two solid wins the following day. In the first game of Saturday's doubleheader, GSC posted two 3-run innings to secure a 7 - 2 victory. The second game would provide most of the excitement as Chipola took an early 4 - 0 lead only to see it diminish late in the contest. The Highlanders picked up runs in the 5th and 6th innings to close within one. However, it was all Gordon State in the final frame as they saw three runs cross the plate for a 6 - 4 win. Once again, the Highlanders will see another Florida team on Thursday as they finally open their home season in Barnesville against Gulf Coast State College.

What was to be a two-day event at home for the Gordon State College baseball team has now turned into a road trip to Florida. The aftermath of the winter storm left the field extremely wet and the two teams decided to flip flop their original dates. The Highlanders will now play in Niceville against Northwest Florida State College and pick up three games over the weekend. The first game is scheduled to start at 6 p.m. (EST) on Friday while a doubleheader will complete the competition on Saturday. Go Gordon!
