Two former Gordon State College baseball players were selected by the St. Louis Cardinals in the Major League Baseball draft. Eventual Champion Bounces Eagles

6. 3. 2014

Georgia Southern University and Kennesaw State University both made strong statements at the NCAA Division I Baseball Regional in Tallahassee, Florida, over the weekend. The Eagles dominated #5 national seed Florida State University with a 7 - 0 shutout while the Owls edged the Crimson Tide of Alabama 1 - 0. The two upsets created a matchup in the winner's bracket between Georgia schools GSU and KSU. The game would be everything you would expect between two in-state rivals.

Mizell, Eagles Shutout Florida State

5. 31. 2014

Former Highlander baseball standout Aaron Mizell belted a double during his first-at-bat against Florida State University in Friday's NCAA Tallahassee Regional. His hit brought in Pike County product Kody Adams and the Eagles were on their way to a 7 - 0 upset over the highly favored Seminoles in the Sunshine State. Mizell continues to be a force for Georgia Southern University. He extended his hit streak to 11 games and was 2 - 5 at the plate against Florida State. FSU also was the #5 national seed but will have to face the Alabama Crimson Tide to avoid elimination. In the winners bracket, Georgia Southern University (40 - 21) will meet cross-state rival Kennesaw State at 5 p.m. EST in Tallahassee. Saturday's game will be carried live by ESPN 3. The Owls defeated No. 2 seed Alabama 1 - 0 in the early game on Friday. The Eagles faced KSU twice in the regular season and lost both contests.

Wow! Wirsu Pitcher Of The Year

5. 23. 2014

Former Gordon State College baseball player Josh Wirsu did it again! After being a solid pitcher for Head Coach Travis McClanahan, he took his talents to Georgia Southern University in Statesboro and didn't miss a beat for the Eagles. As part of the post-season awards announced by the Southern Conference, Wirsu was named 2014 Pitcher of the Year! Wirsu was tied for second in the league in wins with a 9 - 3 record this year. The junior right-hander from Harlem, Ga., also sported a 2.36 ERA and was holding opposing batters to a league-low .201 average. Wirsu struck out 80 batters on the season, tied for second in the SoCon, and has allowed two earned runs or fewer in 11 of his 13 starts this year. He twice struck out 13 batters, doing so in a win over Davidson on March 29 and matching that total in a win over The Citadel the following week. Wirsu was named the SoCon pitcher of the week on April 7 after his complete game against the Bulldogs. What another amazing accomplishment. Congratulations Josh!

Dramatic Finish Ends Highlander Season

5. 11. 2014

Post-season action between Gordon State College and Darton State is starting to become a classic match up! At the Region XVII Baseball Tournament in Albany, the 2014 game would be no different and include all the drama fans could ask for in a "do or die" situation. The Highlanders would take a 2 - 1 lead but the Cavaliers would answer with a run of their own to tie the game midway through the nine-inning contest.
